The lunatic and arrogant lady, Chief Minister of West Bengal, a province of India, has arrested a professor of Chemistry just for spreading a cartoon made on her.

One of the many perils of denying people the freedom of speech—which is among the most worthy of the various unrealized human rights in the world.

She and her party are one of major alliances that are now ruling India. Actually, such acts can show the real nature of the rulers of "democratic" India.

Absolutely. It should be a revealing lesson to anyone under the impression that India is democratic.

There are many other facts that's sufficient to rip the veil of "democracy" in India. It's totally stupid word to veil the semi-feudal social structure in India. How many of us know that the country that can send a probe to moon is behind Sub-Saharan Africa regarding HDI.
Another problem is the arrogant city dwelling youth. If anybody search net with just "professor arrested", they can see a lot of threads in this regard on various newspaper websites. What I want to point the crying the "this is India, not China or N Korea" kind of rubbish. None of the arrogant fools has slightest idea that INDIA LAGS BEHIND BOTH CHINA AND N KOREA REGARDING HDI.
It is very much clear when anybody look at the man:woman ratio, which is dangerously low in "democratic India" as per the latest population census done in 2011. In some states of Northern India, the ratio is so low that often brides are "married to the family" literally i.e. they have to sexually satisfy all brothers instead of just her own husband, the one whom she married. IT'S THE REALITY OF INDIA.
One good website is www.icawpi.org where anyone can found good information about the real nature of Indian state.

That's incredibly disturbing. What factors gave rise to such an extreme gender imbalance in India?

Thank you for sharing that link, I'll be sure to browse through the site.

Basically old feudal mentality. That's prevailing almost all over Asia, not only in India. Here girl child has been considered to be some kind of "liability" as she had to be "delivered" to "others" i.e. in the family where she will be married in future. Another problem is the "dowry", which has to be given to family of the groom as they will bear the "burden" onwards i.e. after marriage. This mentalities lead to killing of child and abortion of babies if they are found to be a girl by ultrasonography tests.
In short, it's feudal legacies that is still now haunting India.

Very interesting. I was aware of this phenomenon in China, but Western news outlets, at least in my experience, don't really discuss its presence in India. I can only imagine the sort of terrible consequences this will have in the years ahead. It typically requires several generations out of poverty for capitalism to sufficiently rid the national culture of the remnants of feudalism, and neither China nor India have reached such a stage in their development. (Considering the myriad of contradictions currently facing the international capitalist system, it's doubtful capitalism will even be capable of fully developing the forces of production in Asia.)
Since we're on the topic of India, what are your thoughts on the Naxalite-Maoist insurgency?

Female infanticide must qualify as one of the most stupid and vile social practices. It is a perfect example of a case in which the short-sighted self-interest of individuals directly clashes with the interest of society as a whole—and therefore ultimately individuals. China's one-child policy was quite understandable given its population, but the cultural (and underlying economic) impetus to skew the sex ratio so drastically can only serve to severely harm the long-term health of the nation.

What's the male:female ratio in China? I can guess that it's better than India in this regard. At present, the rate of increase in population (in %) of China is almost the same as European and other western countries. But, as China already has a big population, therefore even a smaller % increase can be seen as high when seen in number.

According to the CIA World Factbook, China's sex ratio at birth is 1.133 to India's 1.12. The total sex ratio for China is 1.06 and 1.08 for India.

I am sure that you can find them online, but I haven't bothered to search. The UN and government agencies of each country should offer such information as well.
