Occupy Oakland and the General Strike
At the moment, Occupy Oakland is probably the '99 Percent' protest with the most attention drawn to it — primarily because of the brutal police tactics that were utilized against the demonstrators. On 26 October, the general assembly passed a resolution (with 96.9% approval) calling for a general strike to take place on 02 November. How successful do you anticipate this event to be?

PROPOSAL:
We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%.
We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city.
All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them.
While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. People who organize out of their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, affinity groups, workplaces and families are encouraged to self organize in a way that allows them to participate in shutting down the city in whatever manner they are comfortable with and capable of.
The whole world is watching Oakland. Let’s show them what is possible.
The Strike Coordinating Council will begin meeting everyday at 5pm in Oscar Grant Plaza before the daily General Assembly at 7pm. All strike participants are invited. Stay tuned for much more information and see you next Wednesday.

Well it seems that some Americans seem to have the right idea. At least they arent planning on standing around holding signs that say " You Wall Street people are so mean" or something similar. I only hope that things get even more radical than this in my homeland.

Indeed. The Occupy Together movement would do well to finally consider applying some syndicalist tactics to the overall initiative. It's the only hope the 99 Percent movement has, in terms of actually applying adequate pressure on the bourgeois establishment.
We really need more voices calling for such actions at as many general assemblies as possible.

Yeah Im looking forward to this. What goes down with the people at Oakland may be a good lesson for Socialists elsewhere as well. There may be much to learn from this.

As far as it goes, I cannot see how directing a more syndicalist approach would be detrimental to the "cause." I am fully in support of a general strike, whatever the outcome may be.

It'll be a good test for next spring. I think that things will heat up when the weather does, and I agree that syndicalist tactics are a very good idea for the movement. What does everybody think about the nationalist potential of the movement, with the sentiment for a return of manufacturing from other countries?

Even bourgeois liberals like Cenk Uygur are somewhat alarmed by the direction the 99 Percent movement is taking.
