Harpal Brar defends the history of actually existing socialism from the hackneyed accusations of a bourgeois brat.

For the record, I realize that many ultra-leftists would simply dismiss Harpal Brar as a "Stalinist" (i.e., committed Marxist-Leninist) zealot, and some individuals may criticize the Communist Party of Great Britain's (Marxist-Leninist) tactical approach to organizing workers, but I find most of his arguments quite persuasive. Having researched the matter to some extent, I think it reasonable to conclude that there is credible evidence to refute or seriously undermine many of the charges against the Soviet Union, especially Stalin, by Western critics and opportunists on the Left. For example, there is the archival research by Viktor Zemskov, A.N. Dougin, and O.V. Xlevnjuk on the Gulag system and the works by Mark Tauger and Douglas Tottle on the Ukrainian Famine, all of which seriously call into question the received wisdom.

For those of you who are familiar with Harpal Brar and the CPGB-ML, you may be repelled by his dogmatism and rather eccentric views on nominally socialist states (e.g., China and North Korea), but I do believe it is important to defend real socialism from unwarranted attacks for the sake of historical accuracy as well as activism. In any case, the forum's activity has markedly declined, so this can serve as some food for thought, at least.

About time! When you look into the facts so much of what we think of as being common knowledge of the Soviet Union are falsehoods or exaggerations.
