PART I of XIV (English subtitles):
The Founding of a Republic was produced by the Communist Party of China to honor the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. As such, the movie is clearly biased in certain respects. The most transparent fabrication in the film can be found in a brief scene wherein the writers actually attempted to recast Mao Zedong as having been what Mao himself used to disparagingly refer to as a "capitalist roader"—i.e., one who believes that socialism can only be constructed following a period of allowing bourgeois relations to develop the nation's forces of production. Considering China's adoption of capitalism following Deng Xiaoping's liberalization of the nation's economy, the CPC obviously has an interest in having Chinese citizens believe that the party's course of action is perfectly consistent with Mao Zedong Thought. (I can only imagine how inaccurately Mao is portrayed in Chinese history textbooks today.)
Nevertheless, I found the movie quite employable. The plot basically covers the Chinese Civil War, in which Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces are defeated by the People's Liberation Army, thereafter leading to the establishment of the People's Republic. The English subtitles are poorly written on the version I was able to find on YouTube, unfortunately.
