What are your thoughts on this essay's position?Since the middle of the 19th century, the term “18th Brumaire” has become synonymous with the historical moment when democratic legislative power (nominal or real) is usurped by a small group or individual. No better description of this move to establish a “Super Congress” by the White House and Congressional leaders can be made. For all intents and purposes, what we are seeing take shape in Washington today is the 18th Brumaire of Barack Obama — the replacement of the existing Congress with a body that votes on the laws drafted by the “Super Congress,” but cannot discuss or amend them, and Obama standing alone as the First Consul, accountable only to his masters in the alliance of exploiters and oppressors.

This is indeed possible, and is steadily proving itself to be a reality that we will all be forced to witness. If such a thing were to fully come into existence, it would certainly make the general population even more distrustful of our current system and its upholders. But do you think this will make it easier for our beliefs to gain a foothold with the public?

Re: The 18th Brumaire of Barack Obama
I didn't fully understand it, but then it pertains to the American governmental system. However it would seem that the creation of this "super committee" would bear similarities to the way the Stuarts ruled England in the 1600s. The King (or in this case the president) rules by edict through his councillors, parliament at that time, existed simply as a body to rubberstamp the needs of the King (democracy was not considered). Obama (or whoever) would simply rule the USA through his council, or "super committee", and they would in fact rule as powers behind the throne. The traditional government of America would, as early British parliament shows, merely be there to rubberstamp the decisions of this 'elite' group.
I may be wrong in my understanding, but it doesn't appear very democratic. However, if as it seems the 'austerity measures in the States, as in Britain, mean cutbacks in services to the poorer element of society (make the poor pay for the errors of the bourgeois),
the end result can only mean a 'win-win' situation for us SNs if we remain unattached to any future 'Popular Front' calls, and free of the guilt by association that the mainstream left have covered themselves in by this "vote for the best that is on offer" crap that is always hurled out at election time.

I wouldn't expect this to be an American exceptionalism. Keep your finger on the pulse to see if similar changes in bourgeois political forms have occured/are occuring/are being pushed for by big capitalists in European nations or at the EU level.
