Walter Ulbricht's "Ten Commandments of Socialist Morality" Empty Walter Ulbricht's "Ten Commandments of Socialist Morality"

Walter Ulbricht served as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany from 1950-1971. At the 6th Party Congress, in July 1958, Ulbricht proclaimed the "Ten Commandments of Socialist Morality"—which, as the very name implies, were meant to embody the principles of socialist ethics and morality. Shortly thereafter, Ulbricht's commandments were incorporated into the Socialist Unity Party's political platform and widely disseminated throughout the German Democratic Republic. I find they conform quite well with my own socialist convictions, and I'm curious as to whether or not other comrades on the board feel likewise.

The Ten Commandments of Socialist Morality can be seen framed in the photo above, taken at an East German Agricultural Production Cooperative school in 1963.
One can only hope that the day is emerging wherein similar words shall be inscribed on the walls of every public school and collective enterprise in the nation.

THE
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF SOCIALIST MORALITY

1. Thou shalt always defend the international solidarity of the working class as well as the permanent bonds that unite all socialist countries.

2. Thou shalt love thy Fatherland and always be ready to defend worker and peasant power with all thy strength and capacity.

3. Thou shalt help to eliminate the exploitation of humans by one another.

4. Thou shalt perform good deeds for socialism, since socialism produces a better life for all working people.

5. Thou shalt act in the spirit of mutual support and comradely cooperation during the construction of socialism, respect the collective, and take its criticisms to heart.

6. Thou shalt protect and increase the property of the people.

7. Thou shalt always pursue ways to improve thy performance, be thrifty, and strengthen socialist work discipline.

8. Thou shalt rear thy children in the spirit of peace and socialism to become citizens who are well-educated, strong in character, and physically healthy.

9. Thou shalt live a clean and decent life and respect thy family.

10. Thou shalt exhibit solidarity with all those people who are fighting for national liberation and defending their independence.
Rodden, John. Repainting the Little Red Schoolhouse: A History of Eastern German Education, 1945-1995, p. 108.

Great discovery and thanks for sharing this. I'm sure many of us on the left fully endorse these commandments, but sadly I am sure we all know of others supposedly on the left who have forgotten such socialist values.

In fact, that code somehow meant people should be industrious, loyal, thrifty, simple, courteous and down to earth as he/she serves the people. As expected, this means realizing the mass line such as wholeheartedly serving the people and cooperate in pursuit of building a society that is peaceful, just and prosperous what Ulbricht tend to say.

Similar to the Ten Commandments of English Socialist/Labour Sunday schools of the early 1900s

The Socialist Ten Commandments
Love your schoolfellows, who will be your fellow workmen in life.
Love learning, which is the food of the mind; be as grateful to your teacher as to your parents.
Make every day holy by good and useful deeds and kindly actions.
Honour good men, be courteous to all men, bow down to none.
Do not hate or speak evil of anyone. Do not be revengeful but stand up for your right and resist oppression.
Do not be cowardly. Be a friend to the weak and love justice.
Remember that all good things of the earth are produced by labour. Whoever enjoys them without working for them is stealing the bread of the workers.
Observe and think in order to discover the truth. Do not believe what is contrary to reason and never deceive yourself or others.
Do not think that he who loves his own country must hate and despise other nations, or wish for war, which is a remnant of barbarism.
Look forward to the day when all men and women will be brothers and sisters of one fatherland and live in peace and righteousness.
