The United Auto Workers is on the offensive for the first time since Ronald Reagan was elected President and the Post-WW2 Consensus ended. They are currently trying to expand into an automobile factory owned by Volkswagen in Tennessee through a vote by the factory's workers on whether to join the union. Volkswagen, very much accustomed to unions and even corporatist arrangements such as German co-determination laws, doesn't mind the rather moderate union having a presence in the Southern workplace.
However, the local right-wing politicians have a massive issue with the workers finally unionizing for very obvious reasons, and they basically cried and howled about the evils of unionization such as the UAW somehow being responsible for the decline of Detroit (I'm only going to link to this thread to explain my case. http://www.socialistphalanx.com/t1319-detriot-filing-for-bankruptcy ), falsehoods about Volkswagen off-shoring, and denouncing the UAW as "evul liberals who support Obama and Gun Control". Now, the latter is actually mostly true with Obama, since the Democrats are traditionally pro-union, but I have seen no evidence of the UAW having an official stance on gun control. In fact, a majority of unionized workers are against it. (I found the statistics once, but I would have to search for it again if you want to see it.) The Republicans, as expected of them due to their dedication to preserving capitalism at all costs, have decided to go as far as cutting subsidies for the plant if the vote succeeds to the unionize the plant. Apparently, Republicans support the free market as far as bourgeois interests go, whilst they are willing to use government to prevent workers from unionizing and businesses from even accepting unions that aren't even revolutionary in nature. I knew this for a long time, but this is the straw that will unveil the curtain for the masses, if they know about this!
By the way, the vote ended up being against the UAW. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/15/vw-workers-in-tennessee-vote-against-having-union-representation

I'd study the German system if I could really get into it - they certainly don't seem to be as afraid of unions.
