'Obamacare' and the Coming Capital Strike
As mentioned in another thread, capitalists (primarily in the service sector) are threatening to fire and/or reduce the working hours of multitudes of their laborers in response to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. This dynamic is serving to expose the contradictions of capitalism to the American people in a very public way. How do you think they will respond and what do you think the fate of this legislation is?
Re: 'Obamacare' and the Coming Capital Strike
I have very little hope of society at large processing this in anything but a neoclassical framework. Just more evidence of "big government regulation" strangling the perfect private sector.
I am somewhat pleased with the PPACA. It is creating state-run 'public options' somewhat more feeble than the originally proposed federal public option due to initial funding constraints. The PPACA is finally stopping the subsidy to employers for providing healthcare. This will cause many people to gravitate to the marketplace and, hopefully, eventually the public option which should be cheaper because of the lack of need to profit/advertise. As the public options hit critical mass, all of this heads toward the destruction of the insurance companies and a loosening of Big Pharma's leverage when negotiating medication prices. I think it's a pretty brilliant way to backdoor us into "Medicare for Everyone" single-payer, in addition to covering 36 million new people including many with pre-existing conditions. We're getting close to universal health care. People emphasize the mandate being a "give away" to the insurance and pharmaceutical companies too much and do not want to see the big picture.
