After being inspired by a lecture delivered by a Spanish solider regarding the Civil War which Leftist forces were involved in against a military fascist uprising in the Iberian peninsula, a young member of the Communist Party of Great Britain decides to go to Spain to assist in the effort. Once in the country, he joins an international column of the POUM militia and witnesses events which cause him to reconsider his Stalinist convictions.

Thought-provoking, tragic, but nevertheless inspirational, Land and Freedom is one of the best historical fictions set during the Spanish Civil War that I've seen. The writers were clearly influenced by George Orwell's memoir Homage to Catalonia, which is an excellent primary source on the topic. I highly recommend this film to the forum.
