Ideas and Material Conditions Empty Ideas and Material Conditions

Post by Red Aegis Fri Apr 06, 2012 12:01 am

Why is it that ideas and ideals, such as the search for truth, or empathy are not seen as good reasons to come to marxism? In my personal case it was a wish for justice and morality that brought me to Marxist philosophy and economics. I saw the way that capitalism works and was pissed off, royally. I also saw that to make a truly egalitarian society I needed to change property law such that everyone had what rightly belonged to them. I also saw that the republican/parliamentary systems were also unfair. How is this a wrong way to come to Marxism?

This issue has been resolved, but if anyone wants to discuss it go ahead I'll bite.

There isn't a right or wrong way to arrive at Marxism. Material factors can account for the sort of people who eventually learn about Marxism at any given time—e.g., workers infuriated with economic conditions may learn about it on their own or through a socialist or communism organization they interact with; students fortunate enough to attend a college or university may read about it in their sociology textbooks; individuals from privileged backgrounds may read about it in their extended leisure time; etc.—but exactly how one comes to learn of Marxism is irrelevant.
